Most older adults want to stay in their own home for as long as they can. Often a few small changes are what make that possible. I walk through the home with a nurse's eye, looking at how your loved one's health, medications and daily routines affect their safety. Then I give you clear, practical recommendations you can act on.
Signs it may be time
- A recent fall or near-fall
- A hospital stay, new diagnosis or change in medications
- Changes in memory, balance or eyesight
- Your parent is avoiding the stairs, the tub or going outside
- You live out of town or can't check in as often as you'd like
What I look at
- Falls: lighting, rugs, clutter, stairs, railings and footwear
- Bathroom and bedroom: getting in and out of the tub, toilet and bed safely
- Kitchen: stove safety and keeping everyday items within reach
- Medications: how they're stored, organized and taken, with any concerns flagged for the pharmacist or doctor
- Health conditions: how things like dementia, Parkinson's, low vision or heart and lung conditions affect safety at home
- Mobility aids: whether walkers, canes and other equipment fit and are being used safely
- Emergencies: smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, emergency contacts and medical alert options
- Alberta winters: entrances, steps, snow and ice
What you receive
- A written report with recommendations sorted by priority, from quick fixes to bigger changes
- Product and equipment suggestions where they'd help
- Local resources and referrals, such as when an occupational therapist or home care could help
- A follow-up call to go through the report and answer your questions

Common questions
Do I need to be there?
It helps, but it isn't required. If you can't be there, I can go over the findings with you by phone or video.
Will you tell my parent they need to move?
No. My goal is to help your loved one stay safe and independent where they are. I talk with them respectfully and make them part of the decisions.
Is this the same as an occupational therapy assessment?
It's different and they work well together. I focus on how health, medications and care needs affect safety at home. If an OT assessment would help, I'll tell you.
